Why Humanoids are the Most Useless Robots?
By Tim El-Sheikh
A few of us have been speaking out about the AI grift for years, and I even launched my company around it in 2019. But we need more people to speak out to secure AI’s future away from grifters.
Why am I saying this?
Well, I’m seeing the same grifters who’ve been selling you the AI fantasy grift — a reality to which the markets are starting to wake up — are now trying to sell you humanoids. OMG, where do I even start?!
Firstly — I would buy a humanoid because it is a great scientific and engineering endeavour that helps us understand and appreciate the complexities of the human body’s mechanics – something that 99.9% of the population takes for granted.
Furthermore, having a humanoid would be a brilliant toy for geeks like me. But, this is as far as it goes from the Return on investment (ROI) point of view.
Let’s not forget that industries have already adopted robotics for decades, but not humanoids specifically. Why?
Because humanoids are the most useless robots money can buy. The ROI is just not there.
Here is the simple fact: The whole point of robots is that they are *not* like humans!
Our body structure has limitations, and robots are designed to surpass and compensate for these limitations. For example, why on earth would you spend money on a humanoid that can swim if you can instead build robotic submarines?
Or, why would you need a humanoid that can barely walk on the rough terrains of Mars and fall over every few minutes and spend loads of energy trying to stand up again if, instead, we can design and build specialist rovers? Thank you, NASA.
Or, why on earth do you need a humanoid to wash your dishes one by one if you can just use, you know, dishwashers?
Get the picture?
Unfortunately, the Elon types are trying to convince people that Star Wars is a documentary.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, newsflash: It is not!
They keep on using R2-D2 and C-3PO as examples – are you for real, bros?
R2-D2 and C-3PO are *fantasy* robots and, in the real world, they would be terribly useless (and I like R2-D2 and C-3PO!).
Finally, and on a serious note — The field of Robotics is built on real science and engineering efforts that should be celebrated and appreciated for the knowledge it generated over decades.
But, as a scientist myself and as someone who is deeply involved in AI since the late 90s, I’m telling you that humanoids are less useful than humans. You might as well hire a human 🤓
